We are Greening Up Your Life this month with some awesome posts on our FB Class page!  I hope you will come join us!  Easy, read along, learn at your own pace facts, videos and tidbits from MUAH!  :)

Today, I want to talk to you about about the dangers of traditional BUG REPELLENT!!!!!

Your skin is your largest organ, that means your body is DRINKING up everything you put on it! YIKES!

Have you ever read about the dangers of DEET and over the counter bug repellents?

Why DEET-Containing Repellents Are Better Off Avoided

About 30 percent of Americans use DEET every year, but you should know that this chemical – though generally effective in keeping away insects – can have deadly repercussions. From 1961 to 2002, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry reports eight deaths related to DEET exposure.

Three of these resulted from deliberate ingestion, but five of them occurred following DEET exposure to the skin in adults and children.3  Psychological effects have also been reported including altered mental state, auditory hallucinations, and severe agitation.

In children, the most frequently reported symptoms of DEET toxicity reported to poison control centers were lethargy, headaches, tremors, involuntary movements, seizures, and convulsions. Further, in a study of more than 140 National Park Service employees, 25 percent reported health effects they attributed to DEET, including:

 Rashes
Skin or mucous membrane irritation
Transient numb or burning lips
Dizziness
Disorientation
Difficulty concentrating
Headache
Nausea

In addition, Duke University Medical Center pharmacologist Mohamed Abou-Donia spent 30 years researching the effects of pesticides. He discovered that prolonged exposure to DEET can impair cell function in parts of your brain -- demonstrated in the lab by death and behavioral changes in rats with frequent or prolonged DEET use. Other potential side effects DEET exposure include:

Memory loss
Headache
Muscle weakness and fatigue
Shortness of breath
Muscle and joint pain
Tremors

THROW that Deet AWAY and check out this homemade version we make.  We use this on our kids, ourselves and even our dog.  Safe, natural, smells amazing and we love it!!!!

HOMEMADE BUG BE GONE:

10 drops each Thyme & Geranium
10 drops each Lavender and Melaleuca
15 drops Terrashield
15 each Cedarwood and Lemongrass
10 Lemon Eucalyptus (so amazing! 90% more effective then DEET!)

Add distilled water to the top of a glass 4 ounce spray bottle. Shake and spray. Repeat often.

Dale had HUGE blood sucking pests swarming and landing on him, but NEVER biting when we used this spray. Amazing!

You can also diffuse it on your back porch in a diffuser with cedarwood and lemon eucalyptus!  Mmmm, smells good and works good!
